CATHERINE II; EMPRESS OF RUSSIA. Partly-printed vellum Document Signed, "Ekaterina," in Russian, military commission, appointing Alexander Sytina Captain of Artillery. 15¾x11 inches; expert repairs to paper seal, vertical fold, faint scattered soiling, docketing verso.
St. Petersburg, "Summer" 1774
Signed soon after Russia's victory of the Russo-Turkish War--much of which took place on the territory of today's Ukraine--and during the Cossack Rebellion. The Rebellion continued to rage during the summer until its leader, Yemelyan Pugachev, was captured in early September; Pugachev was then executed in Moscow in January of 1775.
