Wood, on a wood and formica base, 1936. Signed, Jose de Creeft. 850 mm; 33 inches high. 864x305x305 mm; 34x12x12 inches, base. Amongst collecors of American modernist sculpture, Jose de Creeft's name is well known. For those not familiar with his typical abstracted forms you may know of his monumental sculpture in Central Park. in 1959, philanthropist, George Delacort, commisioned de Creeft to create a sculpture of the characters from "Alice in Wonderland." De Creeft modeled the figures from the John Tenniel illustrations used in the first edition of Lewis Carroll's beloved story.
